Ride will be firm and comfortable, suitable for extended cruises.Ĭlick to expand.I agree with wendell. Provided the vendor specs the right spring rate, you'll be very happy with the looks and performance. Tubular control arms, coil overs, some bolt in multilink contraption for the rear and you're there. I'd suggest one of the kits from ride tech, speed tech, blingtech. I'm guessing you want something with some more pizzaz. The steps to do so are rehashed in this forum at least twice a week. Guldstrand, Penske and a host of privateers have been doing it since 1967. It's very easy to make a 1st gen handle great by modifying the stock suspension components. If you want a big rotor to fill the 18" wheels, then go for it but you certainly don't "need" them. just awful.Īnd in no way do you need 13" rotors to have good brakes. Over constrained, non adjustable, tough to package, heavy. The truck arm suspension design might, honestly, be the worst rear suspension ever devised by man. There's already a lot of nonsense in this thread. Mike said it as nicely as it can be said. At the very least a new front end, frame ties (maybe throw on the convertibles center frame stiffener) and leave the rear suspension with antique leaf springs controlled by a torque limiter of some kind (pipe in a pipe perfected by Cal Trac, or with slapper bars that use preloading by way of J-bars bolts and spring clamps). ![]() That way you get a car that looks like a Camaro but handles like a 'vette. ![]() The purists will scream, but it is your car, and Dynacore is making new ones every day. Another option not as frequently mentioned is stuffing the front and rear sub frames out of a C5 or C6 Corvette under your Camaro's sheet metal tied together with a full cage. If you have money to burn, look into a full frame conversion with huge by large tires and wheels and even bigger brakes. I like the idea of doing both, since I don't race under anyone's sanctioning rules anymore, but I do subscribe to keeping it safe. If you are restricted by sanctioning bodies to a tire paticular tire size then you put all of your efforts into improving the suspension to make the tire work harder. Most authors are split fifty, fifty on whether tires are the most important facet of a cars suspension, or in having a stiff frame that can articulate to road conditions to mainatin control. I'm a retired engineer, but I have still been reading mechanical engineering technical books on suspension mods. Better solution is 13 inch discs with a wheel and tire upgrade. The first gen Camaro has the steering geometry issues that are easily corrected with tubular A-arms, but it really needs decent brakes (minimum of a 12 inch disc up front which will fit inside a fifteen inch steel wheel, but barely. They allow you to drive for 500 miles in a car with no springs or foam in the drivers seat and still be able to walk when the race is over.Ĭouple of issues with these older cars is that fact that even when new they were a lot faster than their suspension, particularly the brakes could handle. NASCAR uses a truck arm suspension under all of their race cars that have to turn left and right (road race course). It is what GMC used under their light pick-up trucks to obtain a smooth ride and control the torque of the GMC V-6 gas engine that had the torque of a diesel. The four link (used under the Chevelle and big Impala cars offers a smooth ride with torque control with more powerful motors.Ī truck arm looks at first glance to be a ladder bar suspension but it isn't. The Coil over allows for easy changes to spring rate for driving comfort or racing, and you can fine tune ride height as well. What you do not want under any circumstances is a ladder bar suspension that is drag race only. Of the "standard acceptable" rear suspension options found under a Camaro my vote would be for the coil over four link. It isn't the best for straight line competition though which is why drag cars built using those bodies yanked out the IRS rear end and installed a Dana 60 or a 12 bolt to replace it. All modern sports cars, and even some archaic ones such as the Jag XKE and the C2-C6 Corvette rely upon it. Truck arm is the furthest from stock but the "best" to meet your needs with a solid rear axle. "America Strikes Back: The Byrds and Folk Rock". (Thanks to their ability to fly, both hawks and falcons have since spread around the world.)įrom Ericson, P.G.P. ![]() Actually, each got a bunch of them– and the parallels include many details and sub-examples at the species level. It was if each place needed a diurnal raptor for their ecosystem, and each got one. After the breakup of Gondwana over 100 million years ago into Africa, Australia, and South America, hawks evolved in Africa and falcons evolved in South America independently of each other. Well, if you go back millions of years they are related in the same way that songbirds and owls are related (which is very very distantly).Įssentially, the story is this. ![]() Near the top of this list of DNA-discovered examples of convergent evolution is the conclusion that Falconiformes (falcons and caracaras) and Accipitriformes (which includes eagles, hawks– both Buteos and Accipiters, kites, harriers, and Old World vultures) are not related to each other. It now seems that convergent evolution is practically the norm rather than the exception– that various groups of species once thought closely related (and put adjacent to each other in field guides) are not related after all– that they each evolved, convergently but separately from each other, to serve a similar role in the ecosystem on different continents, though many have since spread out over each other. However, recent DNA analysis has blown the lid off this idea. It used to be that there were a few obvious examples of convergent evolution in the bird world– like meadowlarks and longclaws- and then a bunch of lesser known examples for which this blog is dedicated, in part, to illustrating. Here is the dramatic rationale behind it. The Pygmy Falcon flight is especially shrike-like.īirders are well-aware of the recent change in their checklists, which annoyingly relocates the falcons away from hawks, eagles, and other diurnal birds of prey, and puts them deep among the little birds– just before flycatchers. It’s also worth noting some convergent parallels to shrikes, another unrelated raptor. As small non-migratory raptors, each have remained on their home continents– the falcon in Africa and the kite in South America (and into Central America). They also have similar high-pitched repetitive calls, described as kik-kik-kik-kik for the falcon and pip-pip-pip-pip for the kite. Unsurprisingly, they both perch in open, swooping on their prey from an elevated perch. ![]() The kite is so similar to small falcons that it was originally thought to be a falcon until detailed analysis proved otherwise. They also both stand out because they are bright white below (unusual for raptors), gray above, have a lot of white in the face (most notably on the auriculars), and a reddish splash on the body (on the back in the falcon, on the flanks for the kite). Both the African Pygmy Falcon and Pearl Kite are around 8 to 9 inches long and prey on lizards, birds, insects, and other small prey.
